The Mercedes-Benz EQC, launched in 2019, is a mid-size fully electric SUV, with unique styling and a serene driving experience. It has enough electric range to be your only car, and it's practical enough on the inside, too.

Based on the combustion engine-powered GLC SUV, the EQC sits in the EQ line-up of Mercedes-Benz used cars. Reasons to buy a used EQC include:

  • Supremely quiet and refined driving experience
  • Decent electric range
  • Great technology and drive assistance features
  • Spacious interior
  • All-wheel drive as standard

Engines and Driving Experience

EQC models are all fitted with two electric motors (one at the front and one at the back, meaning the EQC is all-wheel drive) that combine to generate the equivalent of 402bhp. This means on-road acceleration is rather brisk; 0 to 62mph acceleration takes only 5.1 seconds, despite the EQC weighing just shy of 2.5 tonnes.

That weight makes itself known in the corners and there is some body roll, so if you're looking for driver fun, the Jaguar I-PACE might be better suited to you.

The best thing about the EQC is its refinement. With the lack of a combustion engine whirring away in the background, it is genuinely whisper-quiet on the inside, making it supremely comfortable and relaxing to drive.

The 80kWh battery pack is enough for 256 miles of range, and the EQC performs admirably in the area of towing capacity too, with a maximum braked towing weight of 1,800kg, the same amount as the Audi E-Tron.

Practicality and Running Costs

Practicality is a priority of every SUV, and that includes electric ones like the EQC.

With this in mind, Mercedes-Benz have fitted an electric tailgate that rises automatically to reveal a pretty large, square cargo area that has a capacity of 500 litres. This is slightly less than a regular GLC (550 litres) and a Jaguar I-PACE (577 litres).

The interior is equipped with large door bins and two storage areas in the centre console, one of which has charge points inside for your phone. Rear leg room is plentiful and headroom is good, despite the sloping roof line. There are three seats in the back, too.

Because of its surprising turn of pace, all variants of the EQC are in the highest (and therefore most expensive) insurance group. Large wheels mean tyres won't be cheap, but EVs cost around a third less to run than equivalent petrol/diesel cars in fuel expenses. With fewer moving parts under the bonnet, maintenance is cheaper.

Stratstone Mercedes-Benz can provide specialist care to ensure your EQC remains in prime condition.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Visually at least, EQ (electric) models from the Mercedes-Benz range are treated to different interior designs to their petrol and diesel-powered siblings. The EQC gets unique-design air vents and additional tactile materials on the doors and dashboard that look and feel great.

The actual vehicle controls will be very familiar to owners of modern Mercedes-Benz cars, with the excellent, configurable MBUX touchscreen infotainment and digital instrument cluster dominating the experience.

Standard features on all EQC models also include voice control sat nav, parking pack with reversing camera, electric heated seats in the front and ambient lighting.

The extensive list of safety equipment resulted in a full 5-star rating from Euro NCAP, with highlights such as:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Speed assistance

Is the Mercedes-Benz EQC right for me?

Despite being the brand's first attempt at a mass market fully electric vehicle, Mercedes-Benz got the EQC spot on. The company's signature luxury and refinement - present in all their cars - has only been enhanced by implementing a near-silent electric powertrain.

Buyers looking for a used luxury electric SUV are well catered for, and you should consider cars such as the Jaguar I-PACE, Audi E-Tron and BMW iX3 before making a final decision.
