Aston Martin’s New Factory and the Cutting Edge of UK Car Manufacturing

Aston Martin is investing in the UK significantly, and have announced that their new factory will be located in St. Athan, Glamorgan – the second manufacturing location for Aston Martin in the UK.

The economy is sure to see the benefit of the new Aston Martin as well as lovers of the brand. An estimated 1,000 jobs will be created directly by the move, with a further 3,000 jobs expected across the supply chain and local businesses.

This significant investment has not gone unnoticed; Prime Minister, David Cameron has commented that: “Aston Martin is an iconic British brand and the decision to invest here shows real confidence in our economy. With our economic strengths and easy access to European markets, the UK automotive sector is thriving. It is one of the biggest in Europe – and the most productive – and Aston Martin’s creation of up to 1,000 new jobs in Wales and the West Midlands is welcome news.”

The decision to stay in the UK stays true to the 103 year-long history of brand building iconic vehicles in the UK. It has been confirmed that St. Athan will be the production site for a new, planned cross-over vehicle whilst sports models and the ground-breaking, electric Rapid-E will continue to be produced at Aston Martin factory headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

The first concepts for the cross-over vehicle, “DBX”, to be produced in St Athan were first shown in 2015. Of the model, Aston Martin CEO, Dr Andy Palmer, says, “It envisages a world, perhaps a world not too far away, when luxury GT travel is not only stylish and luxurious but also more practical, more family-friendly and more environmentally responsible.”

With the popularity of cross-over vehicles growing in China and the US, it is anticipated that 90% will be exported. We expect that they will find popularity in the UK too.
