Introducing the All-New Audi A5 and S5

June has hit with a bang, with Audi unveiling the all-new second generation A5 Coupé, along with its more potent sibling, the Audi S5. Set to be one of the hottest cars of the year, don’t be fooled by the familiar looking exterior; Audi have packed this new car full of surprises.

While the design changes are subtle, it has been refined to make an even classier silhouette, which is no mean feat when considering the self-proclaimed ‘masterpiece’ of the original. Speaking about the design, the A5’s design boss Frank Lamberty said the aim was to keep the original message behind the A5, while at the same time making it ‘sportier and more elegant.’ With a lower-mounted, single-frame grille and creases flowing outwards to add muscle to the car’s nose, the A5 has elegance in spades, as well as a better than ever drag coefficient of just 0.25.

Inside, the Audi A5 lives up to its ‘all-new’ title, dropping 60kg of weight over its predecessor thanks to a new high-strength steel and aluminium body, making it the lightest in its class. An additional 10-litres of boot space has been added with the longer wheelbase, along with optional gesture-control opening via foot motion. Up front, there is so much extra tech packed in, it’s surprising to see even more foot room; options include the likes of Audi’s virtual cockpit, Stop&Go adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance assist, turn assist and Audi pre sense systems to name but a few.

This plethora of choices continues to the range of engines the A5 offers, ranging in power from 190hp to 286hp. Either six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch are options on the four-cylinder engines (offered in either petrol or diesel), as well as the exhilarating 218hp 3.0 TDI, with all three available in either front- or all-wheel drive.

The S5 raises the bar even higher, offering Audi’s all-new 3-litre TFSI V6 engine, capable of a blistering 349bhp and a 0-62mph sprint of just 4.7 seconds. Brushed aluminium accents and 19-inch alloy wheels allow a sleeker, sportier feel to the S5, as can only be expected from the A5’s nimble little brother.

Altogether, the second generation of the classic Audi A5 looks to be everything enthusiasts dreamed of and more, hitting centres this November.
