The Audi R8 Spyder

The all-new Audi R8 Spyder is the newest member to join the Audi family. Unveiled this week at the New York Motor Show, the new Spyder brings not only more power but also less weight than its predecessor - and on paper, it’s set to perform.

The R8 Spyder is capable of reaching 62 mph from a standing start in just 3.6 seconds with its 5.2-litre 532bhp V10 engine, accelerating all the way up to its top speed of 197mph, all without a roof above your head. The ferocious V10 howl is never too far away, with the roof electronically opening and closing in less than 20 seconds when travelling at speeds of up to 31mph.

As well as improved performance figures over previous generations, we should expect to see a huge improvement in the car’s agility and handling, as rigidity has improved by over 50%; the 113kg weight saving also assists with this.

Similarly to the Lamborghini Huracan, the R8 Spyder shares the use of a strong carbon-fibre and aluminium space frame chassis, which offers both huge weight savings and phenomenal structural rigidity. There is still more information yet to be released on the Spyder, but it’s most certainly looking exciting!
