Combining blistering pace with an SUV’s all-wheel drive capability, high seating position and loadspace, the X5M is an excellent choice for any driver seeking a high-performance luxury 4x4.

The body structure of the X5M is built around the passenger “cell" which – along with numerous airbags – offers maximum protection if a collision occurs. At the same time a multitude of active safety measures, including Dynamic Stability Control, Hill Descent Control and Driving Assistant, work to ensure that the vehicle's immense power is always kept on a stable platform.
Optional extras, such as the Head-Up Display and BMW Night Vision (which uses thermal imaging to detect people and animals in the dark), can be useful supplementary aids to a driver's alertness.
A lengthy bonnet and considerable ground clearance gives the X5M even more authoritative road presence than more conventional BMW models. The marque's characteristic and inimitable “double-kidney" grille and menacing bi-xenon headlights take their place above a wide front apron and gaping air intakes, giving an appropriate air of menace.
Vicious strakes in the side panels emphasise the sense of motion, whilst the large, flat rear with its quad chrome exhaust pipes lets the world know that this is a car that means business. 20" or 21" gloss-lathed double-spoke alloy wheels round off the assertive, exclusive look.
Inside, subtle “M" range detailing on the gear lever and the side sills is accompanied by supportive and bolstered seats of Merino leather, Alcantara headlining, and matt chrome, wood and carbon fibre details.
Loadspace is also vast – up to 1,870 litres with the rear row of seats folded forward.
If you need to carry bulky items, the vehicle can tow between 2.7 and 3.5 tons (depending upon the size of the engine) when fitted with a towbar.
The X5M's 4.4 litre V8 engine boasts 575hp and maximum torque of 750Nm at 2200-5000rpm.
Even with an unladen weight of over two tons, this engine gives the vehicle 0-62mph acceleration in 4.2 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
Eight-speed Steptronic transmission supplies a relentless wave of torque, providing a smooth and progressive response even when you are already travelling at high speeds.
The xDrive four-wheel drive system ensures a more stable platform than one would expect of such a high-powered vehicle, and is accompanied by the crisp, precise Servotronic power steering.
As befits its luxurious cabin, the X5M includes an array of driver-convenience features. The BMW ConnectedDrive facility gives you access to a number of online and offline functions, as well as satellite navigation through its large touchscreen. Meanwhile, parking sensors ensure that bringing this large vehicle to rest is a much easier task than one might expect.
