BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid is coming

Set to reach showrooms in early 2017, BMW is expanding its line-up of plug-in hybrids to include the next-generation 5 Series saloon.

A whole new BMW 5 Series model range is due next year, complete with an evolutionary styling update and a broader range of powertrain options. The hybridised version is a vital part of this line-up, and it will offer a zero-emissions range of more than 20 miles.

The new 5 Series hybrid will be equipped with a fifth-generation iDrive system, paired with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine and large lithium-ion battery pack in the floor of the boot.

Quiet, powerful and able to deliver inherent fuel efficiency benefits, the 5 Series hybrid saloon is expected to feature advanced autonomous driving systems, including hands-off operation up to a pre-determined speed, a sophisticated anti-collision system and fully autonomous braking.
