Design

A streamlined silhouette, wide stance and low centre of gravity ensure the BMW i8 is a supercar that can't fail to turn heads. It sports a long wheelbase and short overhangs, alongside striking features such as adaptive LED headlights, daytime running lights and the iconic double kidney grillle. Central to the car's design is its lightweight construction, made possible through the innovative use of materials such as aluminium, carbon fibre and thermoplastic. Remarkable diherdral doors that swing u[wards when opened ensure the i8 is immediately recognisable. The sporty character of the car continues into the interior with its low seating position and driver-focused cockpit. Carbon fibre finishers serve as a reminder of the vehicle's lightweight construction, while sustainable materials such as plastic from recycled drinks bottles are used throughout. A range of ambient lighting settings mean it's simple to alter the feel of the interior to match your mood.

PERFORMANCE

The i8 is capable of providing 231bhp, maximum torque of 320Nm and reaching 60mph from a standing start in less than 4.4 seconds. C02 emissions are kept as low as 49g/km, while the efficient set-up means excellent fuel economy of up to 134.5mpg. Switching between various driving modes, including COMFORT, ECO PRO and SPORT, is possible via the eDrive button. If required, the i8 is capable of travelling for up to 23 miles using electric power alone.

TECHNOLOGY

The sporty yet efficient character of the BMW i8 is all down to the manufacturer's eDrive technology. This sees an agile electric motor fitted alongside a TwinPower turbo charged 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine. A considerable number of technology features and driver aids come fitted as standard, including DAB digital radio, Bluetooth® connectivity, BMW's iDrive Touch Controller and satellite navigation.

SAFETY

A number of active and passive safety features help to protect driver and passengers. The car's high-strength carbon fibre body has been specifically designed to protect the car's occupants in the event of a collision, while also ensuring the lithium-ion high-voltage battery avoids damage. A colour head-up display projects important information directly onto the windscreen, including the vehicle's speed and any relevant traffic signs, helping the driver to always maintain concentration. Also available is cameras located around the i8 to detect potential objects in the car's path, before braking automatically if it senses that a collision is imminent.
