As ever, the Frankfurt Motor Show exhibited some of the finest cars scheduled for release in late 2015 or 2016. Even by the high standards of the event, a particularly exciting model was the Ferrari 488 Spider, the manufacturer’s most powerful mid-engined drop-top yet. The new model is set to go on sale in the spring of 2015, and is expected to cost in the region of £200,000.
Aesthetic appeal and road presence is to a certain extent a given amongst luxury sportscars. Nevertheless, the long front overhangs, pronounced shoulders and gaping grille and air intakes gives the 488 Spider a markedly strong presence compared to many of its peers. The wasp-waisted mid-section and elegant bulkheads meld into further large air intakes and an angular rear, completing an elegant and coherent exterior that is impressively aerodynamic as well as attractive.
The lightweight components of the 488 Spider also help to lend it the requisite stunning performance. A dry weight of 1420kg makes it lighter than most convertibles, and has been achieved through the use of complex aluminium alloys (which have also increased chassis rigidity by 23% compared to the 458 Spider). Despite being a hard-top, the roof is 25kg lighter than a soft-top cloth equivalent would have been, and can open and close electronically in a mere 14 seconds.
The 488 Spider’s 3.9 litre V8 petrol engine supplies 660bhp and maximum torque of 760Nm at 3000rpm. Such ferocious power, particularly when linked to a finely-tuned seven-speed dual-clutch F1 transmission, results in remarkable pace. From a standing start, the 488 Spider reaches 62mph in exactly three seconds, and 124mph in 8.7 seconds. This power and agility, however, is held in check by powerful brakes measuring 398mm at the front and 360mm at the rear, along with ABS and sophisticated traction control systems derived from Formula 1 racing.
