Less than a year since it was launched, and the Jaguar XF has added another award to its increasingly impressive line-up. The XF won best-in-class (1550-1699kg) at the Tow Car Awards 2016, marking the fourth time in five years that the British brand has taken home the prize.

An impressive range of 41 cars competed across the different classes, while judges assessed qualities such as acceleration, gearing and stability at the same time as towing a weighted caravan on a basic hitch across a straight-mile and slalom course. The judging panel, consisting of industry experts from Practical Caravan, What Car? and the Camping and Caravanning Club magazine, all commended the premium saloon’s incredible stability and unmatched performance given by the 180hp 2.0-liitre Ingenium diesel engine.

David Motton, Tow Car Editor, Practical Caravan Magazine, said: “Judged purely on its towing ability, each and every one of our drivers had the Jaguar XF at the top of the 1550-1699kg weight class. It really is that good. We’ve enjoyed towing with the previous XF, but the new model is even better. Very few cars come close to the Jaguar’s unperturbed towing manners at 70mph, and in the lane-change the XF completed the test at ever faster speeds without any pushing or pulling from the caravan – the Jaguar made our most dramatic and violent test seem almost pedestrian.”

A wide range of tests are given to find the car that is the absolute best in each class, such as towing on uneven surfaces, luggage-carrying ability, running costs, reliability and safety. The XF was the only car to consistently perform well, achieving the highest cumulative score across the entire range of tests.

The XF’s unique aluminium construction with the all-aluminium Ingenium engine plays a major role in the excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions of the car, while the innovative Jaguar technology used to reinforce the body means the XF can tow a caravan at 70mph with barely a perceptible difference in towing manners.

The powertrains offered with the Jaguar XF include a 2.0-litre Ingenium engine with outputs of 163PS and 180PS. The 163PS 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel offers an amazing 70.6mg on the combined cycle, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Customers can also choose between two powerful V6 engines; a supercharged diesel with 700Nm of torque or a supercharged petrol with 450Nm of torque.
