Lexus, the innovative Japanese marque, has made the impossible possible. Its fourth ‘Amazing in Motion’ instalment, SLIDE, shows how the brand is able to achieve the mind-blowing task of creating a real, rideable hoverboard.
‘At Lexus, we always try to achieve the impossible’, the brand says, and this ground-breaking hoverboard is a perfect example of exploring a new form of motion.
If you have to see it to believe it, watch the video series from Lexus here that shows the story of how the hoverboard came to be and the technological battles that had to be fought along the way. But the challenges faced were all overcome in a typical Lexus fashion, with months of testing to hone this beautifully crafted creation - the first Lexus to take flight in the form of a vehicle that doesn’t travel on wheels touching the ground.
It’s still Lexus through and through, with the iconic spindle grille and materials used by the brand, including natural bamboo and the hovercraft’s ultra-lightweight casing – altogether, the hoverboard weighs in at 11.5kg, including magnets and the necessary levels of liquid nitrogen.
Haruhiko Tanahashi, Lexus Chief Engineer, has been quoted as saying ‘There is no such thing as impossible, it’s just a matter of figuring out how’ – and SLIDE proves just that, stretching the possibilities of technology and the imaginings of masters of design, technology and skateboarding.
Explore the science behind SLIDE, its build and how it works right here – and see its exquisite design in motion; crafted details, modern materials and technical innovation come together in this thrilling Lexus creation, and it truly is a sight to behold.
