The stunning all-new Mazda MX-5 has won its first prize for the year – the prestigious “Red Dot: Best of the Best”. The awards ceremony was held in Germany end of last month and highlighted some of the best vehicles currently on the market. The “Best of the Best” prize goes to exceptional ground-breaking designs across a variety of industries and only 1.6% of all submissions received the distinction during this year’s Red Dot Award: Product Design Competition.
The award was excepted by Kevin Price, Mazda Europe’s Design Director and Wojcjech Halarewicz, who praised the distinctive features of the all-new Mazda MX-5. “Balancing tradition and progress, the new model was an exercise in knowing what to change and what not to. And I believe every inch of this car radiates life, movement and a promise of fun behind the wheel” said Halarewicz.
The KODO - Soul of Motion design theme on which all new generation Mazdas are based resonates in the all-new Mazda MX-5 with a very affirming front, sweeping lines, wide stance and short overhangs. This innovative design approach won the brand two more prizes at the Red Dot show, for outstanding design quality for their all-new small SUV, the Mazda CX-3 and an ‘Honourable Mention’ for the Mazda2.
The criteria which all the participants in this year’s award ceremony were judged on ranged from design innovations to functionality, ergonomics to ecological compatibility. The all-new Mazda MX-5 took the grand prix in its category, amongst 4,928 submissions from 56 countries. The winners earn the right to bear the Red Dot symbol, an international seal of design excellence.
