As part of the McLaren-Honda Formula 1 team, McLaren is looking to bring more of Honda’s developments in hybrid technologies to their track cars.
McLaren Racing Ltd competes as McLaren-Honda in the F1 car class. The team has been using hybrid systems for some time, with mixed results under race conditions. McLaren F1 teams have won the most Grand Prix races in the last 50 years of any manufacturer. Honda’s involvement has seen stronger innovations from the engineering teams and a renewed sense of purpose.
McLaren’s continued confidence in Honda is clear, as they are the first team to declare their partnership with the Japanese manufacturer for the 2016 race season. The hybrid technology is expected to ensure that drivers Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso need to make fewer pit stops.
Showroom versions of McLaren cars have drawn strong, visible inspiration from the models the manufacturer sends onto the track. The streamlined P1 is an ideal example, forming the foundations of the athletic P1 GTR. The P1 was itself an evolution of the race-winning, classic McLaren F1.
