Design

The new G -Class is still based on a traditional ladder chassis with steel and aluminium body panels, because Mercedes-Benz believes that delivers ultimate off-road performance. Other familiar features of this design icon include the upright windscreen, boxy lines and spare wheel on the rear door. However, the latest model is 53 mm longer and 64 mm wider, the body is now 55% stiffer yet weighs 170kg less, no body panels are carried over and even the iconic exposed front indicators have been redesigned to meet the latest safety regulations. Unique features of the G63 performance flagship include an AMG-specific radiator grille, flared wheel arches, AMG sports exhaust and 22" AMG cross-spoke forged wheels.

TECHNOLOGY

Under the bonnet of the G 63 AMG you’ll find a 4.0-litre V8 packed with state-of-the-art tech like twin ‘hot side inside’ turbos that nestle in the V of the engine. Vital statistics are 585hp and a maximum torque of 800Nm which is available from 2,500 to 3,500rpm. The zero to 62mph sprint takes 4.5 seconds; power is delivered to all four wheels via a fast-shifting 9-speed auto transmission. The all-wheel drive system is rear biased (60:40) and when you’re seriously off-roading you can call into action low range gearing and three lockable differentials – one central and one on each axle. The previous generation G-Class was getting dated in both ride quality and roadholding; in contrast, the new G-Class has double wishbone independent front suspension and adaptive adjustable damping, making it eager and agile on the road as well as sure-footed on the rough stuff.
G 63 AMG Safety

SAFETY

Mercedes-Benz claims the new model is the safest G-Class ever, with a host of active and passive safety features. Attention Assist monitors the driver for what’s known as ‘microsleeps’ – those fractions of a second when the eyelids droop – giving a visual and audible warning. Other features include Active Braking Assist to prevent or mitigate impending collisions, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Traffic Sign recognition. At night, the G 63 AMG’s Multibeam LED headlamps use individually controlled LEDs to precisely mask out other vehicles while illuminating all around it in brilliant light.

FEATURES

It may look familiar from the outside, but step into the G 63 AMG and it’s a whole new world. Biggest change is the fully digital Widescreen Cockpit featuring virtual instruments in the driver's field of vision and a central display above the centre console. The two 12.3-inch displays visually blend into a single unit beneath a shared glass cover, and the driver can choose between ‘Classic, ‘Sporty’ and ‘Progressive’ instrumentation displays. An AMG Performance steering wheel is standard and other standard features include Burmester surround sound, smartphone integration, Nappa leather upholstery and interior air ionisation.
