Want to know how to choose the right oil for your Toyota engine? At Lancaster Toyota, we can help – so here’s how.

Start by looking in your Toyota’s handbook, as here, you’ll find exactly what grade of oil you need to use – it’s vital that you use the oil that’s recommended in order to keep your Toyota working in tip top condition, preserving its performance, economy and reliability.

Using the wrong oil can be costly to put right, especially with diesel engines, as the wrong oil can cause the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to fail.

So, how do you find the right one?

Firstly, you must find the right viscosity, or thickness. Modern Toyota engines mainly use low viscosity oils, which flow more easily and therefore reduce friction within the engine, minimise wear and tear, and facilitate better fuel economy. Viscosities of 0W-20, 0W-30 and 5W-30 are common for Toyota engine oils.

Secondly, make sure it’s the correct specification. C1, C2 and C3 indicate the oil’s ash content, as well as its effect on fuel economy. Check these letters in your handbook against the engine specification. The letters FE, which you may see, signify an oil with normal ash levels, and the letters PFT indicate that the oil is low in ash.

Regular replacement of oil is vital too, as even long-life oils degrade over time as a result of regular heating and cooling – Toyota recommends an oil change once a year or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.
