Volkswagen’s GTE plug-in hybrid is an extraordinary combination of hot hatch power and electric car parsimony.
A vigorous petrol engine works alongside an electric unit to achieve both phenomenal performance and miniscule running costs.
The £5,000 government grant on plug-in vehicles, meanwhile, make the GTE an even better investment.

The Golf GTE comes with a wide range of safety equipment as standard.
The ABS brakes are supplemented by an Electronic Stability Control system, which reacts to sudden and extreme manoeuvres by redistributing torque in a way that prevents loss of control.
If a collision does occur, occupants are shielded from harm by driver, front passenger, driver’s knee, side and curtain airbags; head restraints in the front and rear, as well as pre-crash preventive occupant protection, reduce the risk of whiplash or more serious injuries.
As well as the same mature, handsome silhouette of the conventional Golf, the GTE plug-in features exterior styling cues including 18” ‘Serron’ alloy wheels and C-shaped LED daytime running lights, giving it a distinctive character of its own.
Blue highlights on the radiator grille and around the headlights differentiate the GTE from other models in the rage, and are matched on the inside by blue stitching on the ‘Jacara’ cloth or ‘Vienna’ leather seats, gear lever, and steering wheel.
A touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth® connectivity and a DAB digital radio are all standard equipment, with a Discover Pro satellite navigation system and Park Assist available as optional extras.
The advanced engine configuration of the Golf GTE enables it to achieve extraordinary pace – even as it favours its owner with relatively miniscule fuel costs (and no Vehicle Excise Duty).
The two sources of power are a 1.4 litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor, which between them produce maximum power of 204PS and maximum torque of 350Nm.
Figures that enable the 1524kg vehicle to manage 0-62mph acceleration in just 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 138mph.
Furthermore, the twin sources of power return extraordinary combined fuel economy of 166mpg and CO2 emissions of 39g/km.
The 8.8kW/h lithium-ion battery which powers the electric motor can be fully recharged in less than four hours from a domestic mains outlet, although with the optional fast-charge wallbox this can be reduced to slightly over two hours.
Five operating modes – E-Mode, GTE Mode, Battery Hold, Battery Charge, and Hybrid Auto – allows drivers to adjust their vehicle in the interests of greater performance or power-saving.
