2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race set to be the toughest yet
Regarded as the toughest and most prestigious sporting competition of its kind, the Volvo Ocean Race is set to be even harder for 2017-2018, with Volvo Cars announcing a new route that will push the sailors to their limits.
Volvo Cars acquired the esteemed sailing race in 1997, linking it with their own tradition of excellent performance and engineering prowess. ‘The Volvo Ocean Race is tough and prestigious. So are we,’ said Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive of Volvo Cars.
Now, Volvo Cars have revealed a route for the 2017-2018 competition that will push the crews and their 65-foot high-performance yachts to the maximum as they navigate a total of four dangerous oceans over nine months. The new route spans over 45,000 nautical miles and stops at 11 major cities across five continents, making it the longest race ever.
Around 12,500 of these nautical miles will be in the Southern Ocean; a fast-moving, ice-cold expanse around the Antarctic where some of the deepest weather depressions can generate giant waves and wind speeds of over 130km/h, with no land to break the momentum.
The race not only embodies shared values with Volvo Cars, it also presents a unique opportunity to take the Swedish brand on a global road show, bringing the quality and innovation that Volvo has to offer to five different continents over the 9-month period.
‘In the last edition we welcomed over 2.3 million visitors and over 70,000 corporate guests to our host city venues. We’re determined to offer even more exciting sailing in 2017-18, while making the race village experience even better for our fans, guests and partners,’ said Richard Mason, Director of Operations for the race.
Beginning in Alicante (Spain), the race will stop at several famous landmarks along the way, including Hong Kong SAR (China) and Cardiff (Wales) – the first time the fleet has touched British shores in 12 years – before finishing in The Hague (Netherlands), for spectacular grand finale celebrations.
