We might have to wait until 2018 to experience the new Volvo XC40, which is set to be the smallest Volvo SUV ever; so small it is categorised as ‘tiny’. However, there has been some information released ahead of the launch.
The downsized engines will have 1.5-litre, three-cylinder engines and 180hp. There will also be a plug-in hybrid version available in around 25% of models.
You can guarantee there will be safety features galore to help honour Volvo’s pledge that by 2020 there will never be any fatalities in any Volvo car.
CEO of Volvo Cars North America, Lex Kerssemakers, says, "It's a very natural choice for Volvo. You then have a very nice lineup: XC90, XC60, XC40. Small SUVs, that’s where you see the growth. You see it overall downsizing, so I see big business in the future as it is now, but continuing for the C [segment] premium end of the market.”
In the future, we’re sure to see more of this shift from saloons going into SUVs.
