Versatile big estate with poise and capability
Who needs an SUV? Despite the fact that Audi offers a wide range of SUVs, they also provide the A6 Allroad as a highly capable alternative. Sleek good looks, plenty of space, raised ride height and quattro all-wheel drive. It’s a great combination.
Though it’s based on the elegant, suave A6 Avant estate, the A6 Allroad has several distinctive features that set it apart. First, and most obvious, its body sits 139mm (5.5 inches) off the ground, some 45mm/1.8” higher than the A6 Avant. That gives it useful extra clearance for rutted tracks or flooded roads. The front spoiler blade and underbody protection have an aluminium-look finish, the wheel arches are trimmed in contrast scandium gray and the band between the rear lights is finished in a choice of black or aluminium. Allroad-specific roof rails complete the makeover.
The A6 Allroad is available with a choice of two engines, both based on a 3.0 V6 diesel, whose high-torque characteristics are perfect for long distance journeys or towing. The A6 allroad quattro 45 TDI develops 231 metric horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, enough to propel it from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds. The 50 TDI delivers (286 PS) and 620 Nm, hitting the 0-62mph benchmark in 5.9s. All models have an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive, and all feature 48V mild hybrid technology that save fuel by harvesting braking energy.
The adaptive air suspension with controlled damping was specifically developed for the Audi A6 allroad quattro. It adjusts the ride height depending on the road speed and mode set in the Audi drive select system, with a choice of dynamic, automatic, comfort, efficiency, allroad and lift modes. Inside, the all-digital infotainment system has two centrally mounted screens; the top one, which measures 10.1 inches in the top-of-the-line version controls infotainment while a lower 8.6-inch display accesses climate control, comfort functions and text input. Options include the Audi Virtual Cockpit and MMI navigation plus with LTE mobile data module and Wi-Fi hotspot, though these latter features come as standard with the A6 Allroad Vorsprung trim.
The A6 Allroad features Audi pre-sense front and parking system plus as standard, as well as lane departure warning, rear-view camera and cruise control with speed limiter. The optional Tour package includes functions such as efficiency assist, adaptive cruise assist and emergency assist. The City package adds intersection assist and exit warning to deter occupants from opening doors when stationary and there’s traffic approaching.
Verdict: the A6 Allroad can tackle the rough stuff thanks to quattro all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension, yet it has the business-like style of a big, premium estate car. A stylish, cool looking all rounder for the most active of lifestyles.
