An Audi convertible may be an indulgence, but it’s never
impractical. The new A5 Cabriolet features the latest easy to use MMI
infotainment system and offers 2+2 seating in an elegant, eye-catching package.
You don’t need words to tell you that the A5 Cabriolet is a great-looking convertible. One picture, as they say, is worth a thousand of them. But it’s worth pointing out the new-look front end with its more assertive spoiler and air intakes, the wider, flatter grille and LED headlights. The sills have been redesigned to slim down the side profile while at the rear, the taillights and rear diffuser with trapezoidal tailpipes makes the back end appear wider and flatter to the road. The A5 Cabriolet’s acoustically insulated hood opens and closes in just 15 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph, yet still gives you a boot capacity of 370 litres. For an extra touch of practicality, the rear seats can be folded forward.
Audi UK offers the A5 Cabriolet with a choice of three engines. The 40 TFSI and 45 TFSI are both petrol engines delivering 190 and 245 metric horsepower respectively; the more powerful engine is only available with quattro all-wheel drive. If you prefer diesel, there’s a 40 TDI that delivers 190HP and this can be chosen with either front drive or quattro. All engines feature mild hybrid technology that can store braking energy within a lithium-ion battery and re-use it to give the engine a wider operating window for the stop-start programme, saving fuel.
Your A5 Cabriolet now comes with the very latest MMI operating system that can respond either to voice commands or to touch via a new 10.1-inch display. If you choose the top of the range Vorsprung trim, you’ll also enjoy the full Audi Virtual Cockpit driver instrumentation as well as Matrix LED headlights. The new A5 Cabriolet is also equipped as standard with a Wi-Fi hotspot, and depending on your chosen options you can enjoy online services such as music streaming, hazard information, on-street parking availability and in certain European cities, traffic light information.
The A5 Cabriolet is equipped as standard with Pre-Sense City that uses the front-facing camera on the rear-view mirror to detect vehicles and pedestrians, warning the driver if a collision seems imminent and, in some circumstances, applying the brakes. The Audi Connect Safety and Service is an emergency call service that automatically activates in the event of a serious accident. Audi Parking System Plus and Hold Assist for hill starts come as standard; optional packages include Tour with adaptive cruise control and Pre-sense Front.
Verdict: the A5 Cabriolet is one of those rare convertibles that can be used all year-round as a daily driver. The acoustic hood protects and insulates from the worst of the weather and yet at a moment’s notice you can pop the roof down and enjoy the sun. New MMI infotainment and drivetrain updates just make it even more appealing.
The A5 Cabriolet is available in different versions, known as trim levels. These allow you to choose a version that reflects your preferred styling, driving experience and equipment level. Standard equipment and the choice of options both vary by trim.
