Audi’s bold decision to make the sporty S4 diesel-powered makes a lot of sense. The 347hp mild-hybrid V6 diesel is both exhilaratingly powerful and fuel efficient. And the subtle yet distinctive look of the S4 helps it stand out from the prestige saloon competition.

The S4 saloon features multiple interconnected driver assistance systems, including multi-collision brake assist, a pop-up bonnet for pedestrian protection in the event of an accident, and City Pre-Sense. Options include the Tour package adaptive cruise control with automatic distance control all the way down to a halt.
An Audi diesel won Le Mans not so long ago, so the S4 shows that Audi continues to have faith in compression ignition engines for high performance. The S4 saloon’s 3.0 V6 diesel develops 347 metric horsepower and 700Nm of torque, giving it a 0-62mph time of just 4.8 seconds. An eight-speed Tiptronic transmission delivers the power to all four wheels via a quattro all-wheel drive system with self-locking centre differential.
Efficiency is enhanced by an integral 48V mild hybrid system that allows it to coast for up to 40 seconds on electric power alone. Audi claims 39.8mpg on the WLTP cycle and 166g/km of CO2, while the engine easily passes the stringent Euro 6d-temp emission standard.
Audi S4 owners like their cars to be distinctive but not garish. Based on the classic, clean lines of the A4, the S4 adds brightwork surrounds for the grille, front air intakes and rear diffuser as well as the window line, though there is also the option of a Black Edition that (as the name implies) goes for manacing black highlights.
The S4 also sits lower on sports suspension and is fitted with 19” 5-V-spoke alloy wheels. Inside, the driver and front seat passenger enjoy ‘S’ motif Super Sport seats in Nappa leather.
The S4 saloon presents the driver with an HD-resolution 12.3-inch display and a choice of three views, all selectable via the multifunction steering wheel, while a separate 10.1-inch MMI display handles controls and infotainment.
Other standard features include MMI Navigation Plus, Audi Phone Box with wireless charging, LED signature headlights and Audi parking system plus with rear-view camera. The S4 also comes with a 36-month subscription to Audi Connect Infotainment services.
Verdict: the S4 saloon is a fast car, but in an assured and grown-up style. It’s a car that will garner admiring glances in the corporate car pack and both reward and relax on long cross-country journeys. Mild hybrid diesel delivers both speed and efficiency and the whole package is highly appealing. A sprinter in a Savile Row suit.
The S4 Saloon is available in different versions, known as trim levels. These allow you to choose a version that reflects your preferred styling, driving experience and equipment level. Standard equipment and the choice of options both vary by trim.
