Audi S4 Avant

Sporty A4-based estate now with V6 diesel power only

Introduction

Diesel hasn’t had the best of press lately, so Audi’s decision to launch its S4 models as diesel-only seems a bold move. But the more you look, the better the argument looks. Diesel is now cleaner than ever, the S4’s performance is directly comparable to that of petrol-powered sporting rivals and fuel economy is dramatically better. Time for a closer look?

AUDI A4 MODELS

Safety

As with the A4, the S4 comes with a host of driver assistance systems, including multi-collision brake assist, a pop-up bonnet for pedestrian protection in the event of an accident, and City Pre-Sense to avoid it happening in the first place. Options include adaptive cruise control (including Stop&Go) for automatic distance control. Together with predictive efficiency assist it can brake and accelerate the A4 predictively even where there is no vehicle ahead.

Performance

For the first time, the S4 Avant is powered by a diesel – a 3.0 V6 diesel that develops 347 metric horsepower and 700Nm of torque. For a fast, effortless estate that’s the perfect powertrain – and efficiency is boosted by an integral 48V mild hybrid system that allows it to coast for up to 40 seconds on electric power alone.

Audi claims 39.8mpg on the WLTP cycle and 166g/km of CO2, far better than its petrol-powered rivals with similar performance. 0-62mph takes 4.9 seconds and the eight-speed Tiptronic transmission delivers the power to all four wheels via a quattro all-wheel drive system with self-locking centre differential.

Technology

The all-digital Audi virtual cockpit on the S4 Avant gives the driver a 12.3-inch display with full HD resolution. There’s a choice of three views that are selectable via the multifunction steering wheel. Other functions can be controlled via the 10.1-inch high resolution MMI touch display or with voice control.

In the UK, the S4 Avant comes with a three-month subscription to Audi Connect, including web-based features such as news, Google Earth mapping and Street View and flight, weather, traffic and fuel pricing information. The subscription can be renewed as you go.

Verdict: The S4 Avant straddles the gap between the standard A4 range and the high-performance RS4, delivering a nicely judged blend of speed, fuel efficiency and distinctive style. The mild-hybrid 3.0 V6 is impressively powerful and economical, while the versatile interior space and quattro all-wheel drive makes this a car for all seasons.
