Measuring in at 6.36 metres long, the A8 L Extended features six seats, six doors and six cylinders, and it’s available for special order from Audi.
The A8’s aluminium construction has been transformed to accommodate the two additional doors and seats, going through the lengthening process to add 1.1 metres between the axles, strengthened with extruded aluminium sections to be able to hold the added weight.
The roof has been strengthened too, in order to retain rigidity, with aluminium tubes taking the strain. The rear bulkhead has been double-skinned for strength, too. As a result of these measures, Audi claims that the A8 L Extended’s torsional rigidity is almost equal to that of the standard A8 L.
All of this supplementary aluminium has added to the special A8’s weight, with the A8 L Extended weighing in at 2,418kg, as opposed to the heaviest existing A8, the W12, tipping the scales at 2,075kg.
Fitted with a 3-litre TFSI petrol engine, the Audi A8 L Extended has an output of 306bhp and 325 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed tiptronic transmission and all-wheel drive – it can even speed from 0 – 62mph in 7.1 seconds.
Though not a full production model, Audi is receiving requests for the A8 L Extended, so we may see some on the roads in the future, chauffeuring celebrities or successful business people to meetings and events, comfortable in the electrically adjustable seats in the sumptuous interior, which is upholstered in ‘Velvet Beige’ Valcona leather. An entertainment display and cool box complete the opulent cabin, equipped to amuse the chauffeur-driven occupants.
