Explore Audi’s first RS model – the RS2

Back in 1994 when the Audi RS2 was launched, few could have imagined the scope of its ensuing success and popularity. Now cemented as a legend of quattro GmbH, examples of these super estates are few and far between, especially in good condition.

As soon as this ultimate five-cylinder, five-door Audi left the production line, it became a classic – and several generations of super estates have followed from Audi, including the current RS 6 Avant.

Built for just one year and with just 2,891 cars created, only 182 right-hand drive versions of the RS2 came to the UK – and they cost £45,705 new. When the RS2 was launched it was the fastest estate in the world. And now it’s an icon.

Audi’s first RS model was a huge hit from the start, boasting 315bhp from its 2.2-litre, 5-cylinder engine, boosted by a single KKK turbocharger. The RS2 was able to accelerate from 0 – 60mph in a blisteringly quick 5.4 seconds, reaching a top speed of 163mph. It even sped from 0 – 30mph in 1.5 seconds, famously outpacing a McLaren F1.

Subtle styling highlighted the classic RS2’s abilities over the lesser-powered models, plus trademark Nogaro Blue was available if owners really wanted to stand out from the crowd. All Audi RS2 models built were durable, light and nimble, offering superb handling and incredible pace, enhanced by a tuneful engine.
