Bentley's ground-breaking new crossover SUV is named both for the arctic forest known as the taiga (symbolising its abilities in the most inhospitable environments) and the Roque Bentayga, a peak in the Canary Islands that dominates the surrounding landscape – just as the new model intends to. Aggressive looks, blistering performance and peerless interior luxury make this a 4x4 par excellence for lovers of high-end SUVs.

The hulking frame of the Bentayga presents a unique profile, whilst never leaving any doubt that this is a design straight from the manufacturer’s Crewe production plant. The two-part headlights, either side of the characteristically wide, deep, chrome-lined grille and atop an equally imposing honeycomb-patterned front apron, provide an immediately recognisable visual signature. Muscular shoulders and flanks, as well as steeply raked front and rear windscreens, large taillights and ovular twin exhaust pipes, emphasise the car’s performance credentials.
The cabin delivers the quiet, effortless refinement and luxury one would expect of an ultra-luxury SUV. Despite the mighty engine, little engine noise (or wind or road noise) enters the interior, where high-quality leather seats and upholstery accompany the fine wood and chrome detailing of the simple, elegant dashboard. Legroom and headroom is immense for all four occupants, as well as the total loadspace available for provisions and luggage.
The highly efficient four-wheel drive enables the Bentayga to keep its stability in the worst weather conditions and most unforgiving surfaces. It is helped in this by an effective, but never intrusive, Electronic Stability Programme. A variety of proactive safety systems, meanwhile, alert to driver to certain forms of potential danger (such as a vehicle in your blind spot, or signs of fatigue or loss of concentration on the motorway).
If an accident should occur, however, the occupants are protected not only by the enormous strength of the Bentayga’s structure but also its multiple airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners.
In addition to being Bentley’s first production SUV, the Bentayga will be the first vehicle from the manufacturer to feature a “plug-in” petrol-electric hybrid engine. This powertrain, which will give the Bentayga up to 30 miles of extra range with exclusively electric propulsion, is likely to offer extremely impressive fuel consumption and low carbon output whilst not compromising on performance. The other offerings in the engine range will include the more familiar W12 6.0 litre and 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engines, which may be joined by a 4.2 litre V8 diesel unit. These engines are likely to provide astoundingly quick acceleration, in addition to top speeds in excess of 200mph.
