M4 Competition Convertible 2022

DESIGN

BMW’s 4 Series takes the trend for big, aggressive grilles to the next level. In the M4 models the double kidney M grille is executed in gloss black with horizontal double bars. Other hints at the M4 Competition Convertible’s high-performance potential come in the form of large cooling intakes for engine and brakes, M side gills, and flared wheel arches. Gloss black extended sills lead the eye around to the rear diffuser with quad tail pipes. Inside, M seats in Merino leather come with M seat belts, seat ventilation and air collars. BMW claim the new panel bow roof has the practicality of a retractable hardtop with the looks of a fabric roof; it can be raised and lowered in 18 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph.

PERFORMANCE

To deliver the torsional rigidity expected of a BMW M performance machine, the M4 Competition Convertible has been given extensive bracing elements, including a front axle subframe with aluminium shear panel and rear axle subframe with a rigid connection to the body. Up front, the 3.0 litre twin-turbo straight six delivers 510hp and 650Nm for a 0-62mph time of 3.7 seconds. Power is channelled via an 8-speed M Steptonic transmission with M xDrive and Active M Differential. The chassis specification is specific to the M Competition; it includes a double-joint spring strut front axle with bespoke axle geometry and steering ratio and five-link rear axle with specially tuned kinematics. Drive modes include 4WD, 4WD Sport and rear-drive only in ‘DSC Off’ mode. You can also configure your own preferred chassis and performance settings and save them via the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel. M Compound brakes are standard, while carbon ceramic discs are optional.

TECHNOLOGY

If you’re lucky enough to get behind the wheel of the M4 Competition Convertible, you’ll find an M specific 12.3” digital instrument cluster delivers key information directly in your line of sight. In Sport and Track mode, this communicates information such as tyre pressures, boost pressure and the selected gear. Next to it, a 10.25” central display displays infotainment settings and choices. This runs on the latest BMW Operating System 7 and can be operated by touchscreen or the iDrive Touch Controller. An audiophile standard harmon/kardon audio system is another highlight.
