BMW has announced that they will officially be entering the Formula E Championship as a team partner with Andretti. BMW Motorsport will be cooperating closely with Michael Andretti’s US team, ‘in order to familiarise itself with the processes in this innovative series, and to check the possibility of a works involvement in the future,’ the automaker said in an official statement.

Hildegard Wortmann, Senior Vice President Brand BMW, said: ‘The new motor racing strategy is particularly characterised by a strong brand fit. We will extend the existing target groups and will, for instance, become even more visible for urban and young customers, as with our Formula E commitment. The partnership is set to run initially for two seasons, incorporating cooperation at engineer level as well as the mutual use of resources. BMW Motorsport will also provide its works driver, António Félix da Costa (PT), as a driver for Andretti Formula E. Having already experienced victory in Formula E, the Portuguese driver will contest the entire 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship, giving the team a very positive start to this series.
