Under the leadership of five-time Olympic medallist, Land Rover BAR (Ben Ainslie Racing) Team Principal and Skipper, Sir Ben Ainslie, Land Rover BAR is aiming to bring the America’s Cup home to Britain, back where it all began in 1851 off the coast of the Isle of Wight.
The world’s oldest international sporting trophy has never been won by a British Challenger, but Land Rover BAR is about to make its first attempt.
In the team’s pursuit of excellence and aim to bring the prestigious sailing Cup home to British waters, Land Rover will lend its extensive facilities, ingenuity, expertise in advanced engineering and innovative technology as part of an Exclusive Innovation Partnership.
In Ainslie’s words, ‘We are determined to achieve our goal to bring the Cup home. We want to work with the best, and as technology leaders Land Rover can offer so much to the development of a winning boat. They are a great British brand, but also a fantastic engineering and technology company who will work hand in hand with our design and engineering team.’
By creating a series of test boats together, Land Rover and the BAR team can gain knowledge and collate information to create the final, polished America’s Cup Class catamaran to be used by the British Challenger.
Portsmouth, home to the team’s headquarters, will play host to a Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event on 21st – 24th July 2016, as part of the race programme leading to the culmination of the 35th America’s Cup Event at the 2017 America’s Cup Finals in Bermuda.
