Speculation has been rife of a potential investment by Honda in the McLaren Formula One team. Nothing has been confirmed or denied by either party at this stage.
Honda has already stated an intention to return to the competition in 2015. A buy-in rather than an independent return would suggest that McLaren holds either knowledge or engineering that would be of immense value to the Japanese manufacturer.
McLaren’s motorsports activities have been sustained for over half a century. Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Limited formally came into being in 1963, and over decades of competition the brand has amassed an unprecedented number of victories.
The first year that McLaren challenged Formula One was in 1966 at the Monaco Grand Prix. No other manufacturer has claimed as many race victories in the competition as McLaren – the total currently stands at 182. The motorsports team also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans on its very first entrance to the endurance race in 1995.
The scope of the brand’s high-performance engineering extends far beyond their own team, as the McLaren Electronic Systems division is a technology provider for every Formula One team. It’s widely agreed that Honda would benefit greatly from collaborating and taking advantage of McLaren expertise – and Formula One fans will need to watch this space.
