B-Class Plug-in Hybrid 2021

DESIGN

A compact family car, the B-Class Plug-in Hybrid adds modern elements to its design, hinting at its electric capability. These accents include Multibeam LED headlamps and a diamond radiator grille. The AMG body-styling of the combustion-engined B-Class remains intact for the B 250 e and it sits on 18” AMG alloy wheels with a 5-spoke design as standard. In a nutshell, the exterior and interior styling of the plug-in B-Class is pretty much identical to that of the fossil-fuel-powered model. The only difference is the subtle EQ branding additions that Mercedes uses for all its electric vehicles. Inside, there’s sports seats and a multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather, as well as ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours. Opt for the AMG Line Premium Plus model and this upgrades to electrically-adjustable front memory seats with lumbar support and a panoramic sunroof. The boot space doesn’t suffer too much compared to its traditionally powered sister models (it’s dropped from 440-litres to 405), as the lithium-ion battery is stored under the backseats. If you plan on taking the caravan somewhere nice for a staycation this summer, the towing capacity of the B-Class Plug-in Hybrid is pretty impressive at 1,600kg (braked).

TECHNOLOGY

The B-Class wouldn’t be complete without its suite of technology including the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, wireless phone charging, intelligent navigation and pre-emptive climate control. Opt for the AMG Line Premium model and you’ll receive keyless entry, an advanced sound system, and the digital cockpit display increases to 10.25”. To make your life that much easier, simply tell the MBUX system, “Hey Mercedes, find charging stations nearby”, and it’ll highlight the ones closest to you if you’re ever caught short. Alternatively, the Mercedes me Charge app provides you with access to a large charging network with over 300 different operators in Europe and, once signed up, you’ll get a monthly invoice for the charging points you use.

SAFETY

There’s a number of driving assistance systems in the plug-in B-Class and, with the AMG Line Premium Plus, you welcome the additions of Adaptive High Beam Assist and Traffic Sign Assist. You can also add the Driving Assistance package, which brings with it a range of advanced technology to boost safety.

FEATURES

The 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor combine to generate 218hp and 450Nm of torque. As expected with an electric car, instant torque means the B 250 e responds quickly to acceleration and does the 0-62mph sprint in 6.8 seconds. The plug-in also boasts a top speed of 146mph, but on electric power alone it’ll only reach 87pmh. The hybrid B-Class has an all-electric range of up to 42 miles and can be charged from 10-80% in as little as 25 minutes using a rapid charger, or 10% to full charge within 1 hour 45 minutes using a 7.4kW domestic wallbox. There are a range of driving modes to choose from, including Comfort, Eco, Sport and Electric, which tailor the car’s performance for different driving styles.
