Mercedes-Benz CLA Class AMG Shooting Brake

DESIGN

The front profile of the CLA Shooting Brake has an immediate impact; its diamond-shaped mesh grille, the powerdomes of the bonnet, and deeply scalloped sides mark it out instantly as a Mercedes. The dramatic swoop of the roofline and graceful curve of the electrically-operated tailgate is made more impressive still by the flared rear lights and twin exhausts. A variety of 18” alloy wheels are available in numerous different styles. Despite its low stance and sleek shape (the drag coefficient is just 0.26, which has a highly beneficial effect on performance and economy), the CLA Shooting Brake is as spacious as any estate car on the inside. It offers 495 litres of loadspace, which can increase to an extensive 1,354 litres with the rear seats folded forward. Ambient lighting, supportive sports seats and a leather-trimmed sports steering wheel increase the sense of refinement and well-being.

TECHNOLOGY

Two diesel and three petrol engines are available with the CLA Shooting Brake, with both diesels and one of the petrol units available with the manufacturer’s 4Matic four-wheel drive. The most efficient of the diesel motors, the CLA 200 CDI, can achieve notably low combined fuel consumption of 72.4mpg and carbon output of just 101g/km, meaning that owners need only pay £20 of Vehicle Excise Duty a year (and nothing in the first year of ownership). On the other hand the most powerful of the petrol units, the 2.0 litre CLA 250 Sport, can manage 0-62mph acceleration in just 8.6 seconds. A wealth of driver-convenience technology can be accessed through the 7” high-resolution colour display of the COMAND Online multimedia system. Through this, you can enjoy your favourite music or radio station through the six high-quality speakers, along with Bluetooth connectivity and the latest traffic information from the Garmin Map Pilot navigation system. Thermotronic dual-zone climate control, Parkotronic Active Parking Assist and cruise control are also included with all models of the CLA Shooting Brake.

SAFETY

Front, side and window airbags reinforce the strong protection provided by the rigid bodyshell of the CLA Shooting Brake, ensuring excellent protection for the driver and passengers in the event of an accident. To reduce the risk of such an occurrence, however, the vehicle also features a comprehensive assortment of active safety measures to prevent any loss of control or concentration. ABS and an array of traction control systems are standard to all models – as well as Attention Assist, which detects signs of fatigue on the part of the driver and sounds an audible warning. Optional features include the Distronic Plus proximity control, which ensures a safe distance from other vehicles when you are stuck in traffic, and Collision Prevention Assist, which automatically depresses the brake pedal when a collision appears imminent.

FEATURES

A range of petrol and diesel engines are on offer with the CLA Shooting Brake; turbocharged petrols include the 1.3-litre CLA 200, the 2.0-litre CLA 220, and the CLA 250, which uses a more powerful four-cylinder engine to produce 225hp. Alternatively, the diesel options provide more power and better fuel economy; ideal if you’re a regular on the motorway and rack up a lot of miles. Failing that, there’s the 150hp CLA 200d or previously best-selling 190hp CLA 220d. All engines come with manual or dual-clutch transmission, and you can choose from front-wheel or all-wheel drive. For high performance, AMG models are also available.
