TThe CLS combines the elegance and dynamism of a coupé with the comfort and functionality of a saloon. The AMG CLS 53 comes with even more striking and sportier styling updates such as A-wing shaped AMG bumpers with black flics and visible air curtains, as well as the AMG signature grille. At the back, you’ll find split taillights and diffuser insert plus twin tailpipes at either side. Side panels carry a small ‘Biturbo 4MATIC+’ badge while the perforated front brake discs carry brake callipers with AMG lettering. Wheels are 19” aero-optimised alloys, though you’ll find 20-inchers on the options list. The smooth, sweeping lines of the AMG CLS 53 conceal a useful amount of passenger and boot space beneath the coupé like profile. There’s also lots of possibility for further personalisation with a range of equipment packages such as the Night Package (which adds high-gloss black styling) or the Dynamic Plus Package (which comes with red brake callipers and a performance sports steering wheel).
TECHNOLOGY
Rest assured that technological sophistication comes as standard with the CLS 53 4MATIC+. This includes the MBUX infotainment system that can be controlled either by ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice command or touch. A widescreen (12.3-inch) high resolution cockpit display offers a choice of three display styles, while an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot, 3D satellite navigation mapping, smartphone integration and a Burmeister sound system all come as standard. Luxurious touches include 64-colour interior ambient lighting, Keyless GO and memory seats, while you can also opt for a head-up display.
SAFETY
The long list of standard safety systems includes the Pre-Safe anticipatory safety system, Lane Keeping Assist, Active Brake Assist and the Active Bonnet pedestrian safety feature. The Mercedes me connect service includes an emergency call system (eCall), accident recovery, breakdown assist, and maintenance management. There’s also a 360° camera for parking and manoeuvring into tricky spots.

‘53’ is a new engine designation for AMG and under the bonnet you’ll find a 3.0-litre bi-turbo straight six engine that develops 435hp and torque of 520Nm. It’s augmented by an electric auxiliary compressor for instant boost and faster throttle response. The EQ Boost starter-alternator adds a further 22hp and 250Nm of torque and an engine-off coasting function. The net effect of all this engineering innovation? Zero to 62mph takes just 4.5 seconds yet combined CO2 emissions are just 200 g/km. The AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission and 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution ensures high levels of traction whatever the road conditions. The AMG Ride Control+ air suspension constantly adjusts damping for outstanding driving dynamics with high ride comfort. If you opt for the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, you’ll be able to play with the additional Race driving mode, which features a drift mode. You can also improve your racing skills with AMG Track Pace, which provides you with live data and performance stats.
