While the outgoing E-Class Coupé was based upon the C-Class platform, the all-new model shares the same underpinnings as the E-Class Saloon. This means it’s usefully more spacious inside with genuine room for four adults, though – being a coupé – its natural role is as a relaxed and accommodating grand tourer for two. Packed with technology, elegant and refined, it’s not a car to thrash around the Nürburgring, but for a continental tour (or a drive to the coast) there’s little to touch it.
Mercedes-Benz have been pioneers of safety from the earliest times, so not surprisingly the E-CLASS Coupé benefits from all the latest driver aids and support systems. Active Brake Assist scans the road ahead and warns of potential hazards, and can even intervene to apply brakes autonomously. Another safety option is Attention Assist, which monitors the driver for signs of tiredness and warns when it’s time to take a break. Other features include the Pre-Safe anticipatory safety system, Electronic Stability Programme and Tyre Pressure Monitoring.
People buy coupés for the way they look and many will fall in love with the svelte E-Class Coupé for that reason alone. It’s lower and more athletic in appearance than its four-door counterpart, with a distinctive grille and front air intakes, smooth aerodynamic profile and tapering tail. Inside, there’s a clever mix of traditional craft with modern tech, such as the spaceship-like air vents and the tubular dials set within a digital driver display screen.
Mercedes offers a choice of two and four-wheel drive, and diesel and petrol engines, though not all permutations of the two. The diesel range includes the impressive E220d, powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that delivers a hugely impressive 61.4mpg with 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds. Alternatively, there’s the E350d, with a 255bhp 3.0-litre V6. Unlike the 220d, this is only available in all-wheel drive 4MATIC form. Move to the petrol models and there’s the E300, which is a 2.0-litre turbo developing 245hp, and the range-topping E400 4MATIC, powering from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds thanks to its 3.0-litre V6.
The E-Class Coupé comes as standard with ambient lighting and a seat comfort package with multiple electronic adjustments. But the options list includes some tempting upgrades. The Driving Assistance Package includes Drive Pilot, allowing a degree of hands-off control plus cruise control that slows right to a halt in a tailback and then resumes as the road clears. COMAND online offers extra connectivity, navigation and entertainment features while the Widescreen cockpit display adds a crystal-clear 12.3” display to the well-equipped and designed fascia.
Verdict: An E-Class Coupé has always been a clever blend of usability, style and relaxed performance, and the latest series is the best yet: swift, refined and eager to tackle the grandest of tours. You might still reach the south of France faster by air, but we’d guarantee you wouldn’t be as relaxed on arrival.
