Design

Both the SUV and the Coupé are near-identical in weight and performance, so the choice comes down to whether you need the extra height of the SUV load bay or prefer the smooth sweep of the Coupé’s elegant profile. Both offer ample interior space; the SUV has 550 litres of boot space which becomes 1600 litres with all seats folded. Figures for the Coupé are 500 and 1400 litres respectively.

Both models stand apart from the rest of the GLC range thanks to the distinctive vertical louvres of their AMG grille, augmented by an AMG body styling kit. This includes an AMG front apron with sporty air intakes, AMG rear apron and round exhaust tailpipes. The SUV and Coupé both run on 19" AMG 5-twin-spoke alloy wheels.

TECHNOLOGY

Standard features on the GLC 43 4MATIC include the MBUX multimedia system that can be controlled either by touch or the voice command ‘Hey Mercedes’. The Premium model adds a 12.3” digital instrument cluster as well as augmented reality navigation, which combines real-time camera images with sat nav information to superimpose street names, turnings and house numbers on the media display. The 43 Premium also includes 64-colour ambient lighting and a 225W audio system.

The Mercedes-AMG 43 4MATIC is powered by an uprated 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine driving all four wheels via an AMG Speedshift TCT 9-speed automatic. The sprint from 0-62mph takes just 4.9 seconds and top speed is electronically governed to 155mph.

Safety

All Mercedes-AMG GLC models are fully equipped with both active and passive safety systems, starting with airbags for driver and front passenger with an additional knee bag for the driver and window bags for all the car’s occupants, front and rear.

The Attention Assist programme monitors the driver for signs of tiredness or inattention, while the Collision Attention Assist Plus first warns the driver if he’s too close to the vehicle in front, then sounds an acoustic alarm and if the situation escalates, can even activate the brakes.
