The Concept EQG doesn’t stray too far from the immensely popular design of the G-Class; the concept car combines it’s unmistakable look and shape with modern features taken from the rest of the EQ range. Instead of the traditional radiator grille, a Black Panel Grille is illuminated with the blue hue now associated with EQ vehicles. Whilst the EQG maintains classic round headlights, it’s replaced the spare wheel cover with a lockable box to store the likes of charging cables.
The Concept EQG also features a two-tone paint finish – aluminium on the bottom and black on top – and sits on 22” polished wheels. There’s also a black flat roof rack which features an LED strip, modernising the roof-mounted spot lamps so often found on off-roaders. “For us, the most important thing was to keep the full G-Class DNA but beam it into the EQ age: like the G-Class but different,” explained Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler Group.
Features
Mercedes stresses that the EQG remains an uncompromising off-roader, equally as capable as its conventionally-fuelled sibling. In fact, the team claims the electric powertrain actually benefits the EQG as an off-roader, as the instant torque and low centre of gravity make for optimum handling.
It will come with independent front suspension and rigid rear axle, a shiftable two-speed gearbox and all-wheel drive. The four individually controllable electric motors allow for great pulling power and controllability. And like the original G-Class, the EQG will have a climbing capacity of up to 100%.
But for those still cynical about how the EQG will perform, Mercedes has announced it will be put through a track test to conquer the 1,445-metre high Schockl mountain in Graz, Austria, at the end of its development.
