MERCEDES-AMG GT ROADSTER 2021

DESIGN

Think of a classic sports car profile with its long bonnet, powerful rear end and low, wide stance. The Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster takes that image and turns the dial up to 11. At the front, the AMG ‘Panamericana’ grill with its vertical chrome bars echoes the look of the AMG GT3 racing car. At the rear there’s a new-design diffuser with double-trapezoidal tailpipe trims and centrally located LED fog lamp. The Roadster’s insulated three-layer fabric roof raises and lowers in 11 seconds at speeds up to 31mph, and is available in black, red or beige. For an even more dramatic effect, the Night Edition model features AMG alloy wheels in matt black with black-painted brake callipers, AMG radiator grille in dark chrome and black-gloss exterior brightwork, while the interior continues the theme with black Nappa leather and AMG Interior Piano Lacquer Trim.

TECHNOLOGY

Like its stablemate the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé, the Roadster is powered by AMG’s 4.0-litre V8, whose twin turbochargers are mounted in the middle of the engine’s ‘V’ to provide lag-free throttle response, higher torque at low rpm and greater fuel efficiency. Maximum power is 530 metric horsepower, and 0-62mph takes just 3.8 seconds. The aluminium space frame architecture makes the body both light and remarkably stiff, and the dry-sump V8 is mounted far back in the engine bay, giving a weight distribution of 47% at the front and 53% at the rear. AMG Ride Control sports suspension gives the driver a choice of three levels of adjustment, the transmission is an AMG Speedshift 7-speed DCT and the AMG limited-slip rear-axle differential helps put the power cleanly down onto the tarmac. The Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster also boasts active aerodynamics, with a moveable Airpanel in the front and extending rear spoiler delivering impressive downforce at high speeds.

SAFETY

Active safety is a Mercedes-Benz priority, and the Roadster has a suite of systems under the umbrella title of Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive. These include Distronic cruise control that monitors and maintains the gap to the vehicle in front and Active Braking Control that can first warn and then intervene if it senses an impending collision that the driver hasn’t responded to. Blind Spot Assist monitors the area behind and to the side of the car and sounds an alert if you indicate to pull into another vehicle’s path. If an accident is inevitable, Pre-Safe uses the remaining microseconds to tighten belts and close windows.

FEATURES

The interior of the AMG GT Roadster puts you in the right frame of mind for an exhilarating drive. Sculpted, low-set AMG sports seats hold you comfortably but firmly, the AMG performance steering wheel in black Nappa leather and Dinamica microfibre falls perfectly to hand and there are shift paddles at your fingertips to select gear manually. The centre console’s design echoes the V8 engine configuration and is the command centre for sports transmission and driving dynamics settings, which include Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Race. Seats, steering column and mirrors are programmable via the Memory function and the headrest mounted Airscarf wafts warm air at neck level for when you’re travelling in cooler weather with the hood down.
