Meet the new Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept car

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its exclusive new concept car, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, at Pebble Beach Concours D’Elégance car show in California, America.

The 2+2 design is a luxury-class coupé that pays homage to the glorious age of aero coupés. Mercedes-Benz says it reinterprets classic, emotional design principles in an extreme way, following the brand’s design philosophy of sensual purity.

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 measures almost six metres in length and is entirely electric-powered. We’ve got the design details and specifications.

Emotional exterior design

Mercedes-Benz calls the design hot and cool, with sensual, emotional ‘hot’ elements and ‘cool’ intelligent details. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 reinterprets the classic aesthetic proportions of an aero coupé, from the extremely long bonnet to the low roof line and the rear positioning of the greenhouse.

But the design is simultaneously new and reduced. The shape is designed with basic aerodynamics so the airflow hugs the contours even without aids like spoilers. The narrow lights, partially transparent rims and split rear window create a technoid character.

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 also creates a shape contrast between the contours and wings and the sharply drawn feature line running from the radiator grille across the length of the car. Below this line, the body has a muscular look.

The Maybach red paintwork also contrasts against the chrome strips above the wheel arches and in the bonnet centre and boot lid.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille is reinterpreted with fine vertical struts inspired by a pinstriped suit. The distinctive 24-inch wheels are protected by a transparent shield which provide a view of the aluminium spokes behind them.

The hallmark Mercedes gullwing doors underline the car’s sporty character and the exterior mirrors are designed as cameras and supported by the wings.

At the rear the extended ‘boat tail’ shape recalls a luxury yacht, while the narrow tail lights emphasise the car’s width.

Intelligent interior design

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 also has a highly conceptual interior filled with new in-car technology. The dashboard wing curves across the door trim towards the seats, creating a 360 degree lounge.

A luxury experience is highlighted by the top spec materials used, from high-quality leather for a Chesterfield look to delicate rose gold accents. The doors and dashboard have a traditional wood trim to soften the appearance of the digital displays. And pale, open-pore elm wood is used in the floor area to echo the yachting look.

In the front luggage area are two suitcases developed exclusively for the vehicle. The designers have followed the sensual design of Mercedes-Benz, creating space for picnic accessories and personal items.

Finally, the floating centre tunnel also visualises the drive system’s electrical energy flow.

Digital display future

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is designed to blend the modern digitisation of driving with sustainable analogue instruments. These classic instruments reference the history of Mercedes-Benz and come complete with needles and circular, cystal-look displays.

Other dashboard elements are digitally integrated into the continuous glass trim display. Information about the seats, plus maps and menus are provided on the screen, and users can set their own content using touch control.

The front windscreen also works as a transparent augmented reality display for driving data and geographical information, which is gesture-controlled.

The luxury padded leather upholstery is also integrated with digital technology, including miniature ‘body sensor displays’. These scan the passengers to monitor vital functions and adjust for comfort and climate control, even activating a massage function. The sensors also watch for light levels, clothing colours and ambient temperature to create internal lighting effects.

Electric drive technology

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is designed as an electric car. It has four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, which create an all-wheel drive car. The system’s output is 550 kW, making 750 hp.

This performance is comparable to a typical sports car, including acceleration from 0 - 100 kmh in under four seconds and a top speed of 250 kmh.

The shallow underfloor battery has a capacity of approximately 80 kWh, allowing a range of over 500 km according to the NEDC.

The concept car also showcases a visionary quick-charge function using direct current charging. In just five minutes the driver can charge the battery with enough power to create an additional range of around 100 km.

The battery can be charged via a cable connection, either from a public charging station or a domestic power outlet. Or it can be charged wirelessly via an electromagnetic field.

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is the latest in a series of exclusive and individual designs from the Mercedes-Benz and Maybach partnership.
