Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

Introduction

The fourth-generation E-Class is one of the world’s finest executive cars – and the E63 AMG adds sports styling and an even more vigorous turn of pace to this redoubtable package.

With its 5.5 litre turbocharged V8 petrol engine, smooth transmission and luxurious, roomy interior, the E63 AMG is a car with few equals.

AMG Range

Design

The E-Class presents the customary aggressive AMG face to the world, with its prominent crest, lynx-eyed headlight signature, muscular shoulders, and dynamic side strakes all contributing to its domineering character. Four chrome exhausts and distinctive 19” AMG alloy wheels complete the majestic, refined yet assertive exterior. Premium finishes abound, along with high-quality Black Ash wood trim and Nappa leather seats and upholstery that make even the longest journeys comfortable and relaxed. The lengthy wheelbase of 2874mm, means that even large adults enjoy an outstanding amount of legroom. Ample boot space of 540 litres (695 for the estate, meanwhile, is more than adequate for most everyday concerns – and in the case of the estate model, this can extend to 1950 litres with the rear seats folded forward.

Technology

A raft of driver-convenience technology is available with the E63 AMG, from Thermotronic automatic climate control to the Harman Kardon™ 14-speaker sound system and the enormously versatile COMAND Online infotainment hub.

Despite these attractions, however, the most fascinating and entertaining technology of all is under the bonnet.

The 5.5 litre V8 unit delivers 557hp and maximum torque of 720Nm – numbers which increase to 585hp and 800Nm with the even more monstrously powerful “S” edition.

The effect of this is predictable, particularly taking into account the highly responsive AMG MCT seven-speed automatic transmission.

The standard E63 AMG can reach 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds, with the “S” edition achieving this feat in 4.1 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, although with the optional Performance Pack this can rise to 186mph.

Fittingly, the cabin technology includes a race timer, so that you can assess your performance on track days.

Safety

Airbags for the driver and front passenger, as well as side- and window-mounted bags and those to protect the driver’s knee, provide the best possible all-round protection if an accident should occur. Adjustable head restraints and ISOFIX child seat moorings also guard against injury.

A range of active safety features, meanwhile, should hopefully ensure that no such misfortune comes to pass; standard equipment includes hydraulic brakes, ABS with Brake Assist and ESP with Acceleration Skid Control.

The manufacturer’s “Intelligent Drive” suite of (optional) active safety measures ensure that the driver can detect and counteract the symptoms of driver fatigue before any danger arises.

Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control with Steering Assist maintains full control of the vehicle through automatically keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front, while Lane Keep Assist prevents the car from going off-course when travelling at high speeds (due to tiredness or loss of concentration).
