To anyone who wonders whether an SUV can ever be as fun to drive as a sports car, Porsche has a one-word reply: Macan. Their brilliant compact SUV combines a supple ride, practical interior space and generous levels of equipment with cornering ability that seems to defy the laws of physics. The Macan GTS, based upon the Macan S, adds an extra touch of sporting style and performance at an appealing package price. As with other Porsche GTS models, it’s often considered the ‘sweet spot’ in the range.
The Macan GTS features up to 10 airbags (rear sidebags are optional), while Porsche Stability Management helps to ensure you don’t need them. This system monitors driving direction, speed, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration, intervening to stabilise the vehicle by strategically braking individual wheels. It also primes the brakes for faster reaction if the driver suddenly releases the accelerator. If panic braking does ensue, the adaptive LED brake lights begin to pulsate, alerting following traffic.
Like the Macan S, the Macan GTS is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, but the performance package for this model includes a worthwhile power increase. Maximum power is boosted by 20hp to 360hp at 6,000rpm, and peak torque of 500Nm (up from 460Nm) is reached between 1500 and 4000 rpm. 0-62mph takes just 5.2 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the S. The powertrain includes a 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox and the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) active all-wheel drive system, which can divert up to 100% power to either the front or rear axles if necessary.
Also standard on the GTS is sports air suspension; the Macan GTS sits 15mm lower than the S model and features Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). Sport and Sport Plus settings for the dampers reduce roll in stages, keeping the GTS flatter under hard cornering.
The Macan is unmistakably a Porsche, with a sporting stance and signature features like recessed headlights, curving front wings and a tapering bonnet line leading to large air intakes in the front apron. The rear-end treatment has echoes of the 911 while the lines are smooth and unsullied by gimmicky styling lines or creases. The GTS stands out with unique styling features like 20” RS Spyder Design wheels in satin black, Bi-Xenon headlights in black, black-tinted taillights and SportDesign body package with black side skirts.
Black sports exhaust tailpipes provide a finishing touch. Inside, GTS owners will settle into a combination of leather and Alcantara™ as standard, with GTS-embroidered sports seats and an interior package in in Carmine Red or Rhodium Silver.
The Macan GTS package includes Porsche Communication Management (PCM), with Connect Plus giving access to Porsche Connect services. An advanced seven-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, which integrates your iPhone with the car.
Other tech features like parking sensors, cruise control, lane departure warning, DAB and Bluetooth are all standard, as are LED main headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus. This feature offers a dynamic cornering function as well as speed-sensitive headlight range control.
Fast, agile, stylish and spacious, the Macan GTS is a compact SUV for the driver who isn’t prepared to sacrifice sporting thrills for utility. Extra power, sports air suspension and subtle design cues distinguish it from the Macan S, while the way it accelerates, steers and brakes distinguish it from every other premium compact SUV.
