ŠKODA OCTAVIA ESTATE
ŠKODA has become famous for cars that compete with everyday makes on price yet compare favourably with models in the next segment up for space and specification. The Octavia Estate range is the perfect example. It offers ample interior space for five passengers, has a huge and practically-shaped load space and comes with a choice of specifications at highly competitive price points. It’s big value in every sense.
A recent design update gave the Octavia Hatch and its estate models a fresh new look, with a new four-headlight front end design blending nicely into the crisply-defined lines of the bonnet. The profile is clean, unfussy and restrained, with strong lines and fastback rear. vRS models have a lower, sportier look to go with the impressive performance and handling.
Performance and efficiency
Today’s trend towards smaller capacity turbocharged engines is exemplified by the peppy three-cylinder 1.0 litre TSI petrol engine, which is the entry-level powertrain for the Octavia Estate. 0-62mph takes just 9.9 seconds and CO2 emissions are just 104g/km. For a bit more go at motorway speeds, the next petrol engine up is the 1.4 TSI 150, and there’s a choice of 1.6 TDI 115 and 2.0 TDI 150 models if you’re interested in the extra fuel efficiency of diesel (all ŠKODA diesels are Euro 6 compliant). For the ultimate in performance there’s a petrol 2.0 TSI with a 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds, or a 2.0 TDI diesel which does the same benchmark in 7.6 seconds. As the performance flagship of the range, the sporty VRS models can only be ordered with one of these two powertrains.
The Octavia Estate S, the entry-level model, comes as standard with a crystal-clear 8.0in touchscreen, Smartlink featuring Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink, Bluetooth, a DAB radio and a USB socket. Move up the range and you can add parking sensors, cruise control, updated infotainment and Wi-Fi connectivity. Luxury flagship Laurent and Klement specification includes an automatic parking system, upgraded stereo and a larger 9.2” touchscreen.
Seven airbags come as standard, with additional rear side airbags as an optional extra. Standard features include hill-hold assist, stability control and tyre pressure monitoring, while some models also feature an innovative front assist system. The ŠKODAOctavia scored a maximum 5 stars in the benchmark EuroNCAP safety tests.
Volkswagen Group technology, quality and engineering know-how have transformed ŠKODA into a Europe-wide success story. Originally ŠKODA was the group’s ‘value’ brand but it’s increasingly premium nowadays in design, technology and equipment. The Octavia Estate is typical of the marque, offering more than you’d expect for the money while comparing favourably with some premium badges. It’s spacious, versatile, good-looking and well-equipped.
