The big sporty vision from Toyota is getting closer, as the Japanese brand has announced that a hot hatch based on the Yaris city car will be added to the sports car line-up. This range is set to include ‘three brothers’, as we covered a few weeks ago, and now the hot hatch addition too.
Akio Toyoda, Toyota CEO, has expressed his desire to inject some ‘wow’ into the brand, adding a ‘daring’ touch to its ‘dependable’ reputation – and the release of a hot hatch, a new Supra successor, a production version of the S-FR concept car and another performance vehicle in Toyota’s range would certainly be daring.
Tetsuya Tada, Toyota’s Chief Engineer for sports vehicles, has been challenged by Toyoda to create a close link between the road and sports cars produced by the brand – hopes of forging this bond have been pinned on a power house based on the Yaris, which is already being tested for the world rally stage. ‘We need a real hot hatch. I must create a real exciting hot hatch’, Tada stated.
Tada wouldn’t say which of these exciting new cars would come first, so we will have to wait and see. ‘They are coming soon. Please be patient’, he said. A hot hatch based on a world rally car will certainly be worth the wait.
