Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has revealed the new California model which remains the only factory-built camper van currently on the market. The latest upgrade is the fourth generation of the California and includes many of the key features that were also included on the new Transporter T6.
With engines that are 15 percent more economical as well as additional advanced safety features, the new California offers a more enjoyable all round driving experience than its predecessor. Adaptive suspension is on offer to help drivers enjoy smooth journeys and there is also a new infotainment system.
In terms of power, there will be a choice of petrol and diesel engines with outputs ranging from 102bhp in the 2.0-litre TDI engine up to 201bhp in the 2.0-litre TSI petrol option. A Driver Alert System, Brake Assist and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System are all fitted as standard, which means peace of mind driving at all times.
Two trim levels are available, with both the Beach and Ocean allowing enough room for four people to sleep in the California, with the pop-up roof creating space for a 1.2m x 2m double bed. Ocean models are fitted with a kitchen that features a 43-litre fridge and twin-burner hob.
The California camper van was first introduced in 1988 and it has been a popular model ever since, with more than 100,000 models sold across the three versions that have so far been produced.
