A first look at the Volkswagen Arteon

Ahead of its world premiere at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March, Volkswagen has provided a sneak preview of its new premium saloon, the Arteon.

The German manufacturer revealed a first glimpse of the new Arteon in the form of a detailed sketch of the car’s side view exterior. The image reveals a fresh, curvy and slick exterior profile which hints at Volkswagen’s intentions for the Arteon to rival the very best in the executive car class.

Although the sketch released by Volkswagen only previews the new saloon from the side, it’s clear that the Arteon is heavily based on the Sport Coupe GTE Concept which Volkswagen showcased at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

The emotive outline is coupled with a highly expressive design language which may form the basis of future Volkswagen models. Additionally, the bars of the radiator grille blend seamlessly with the three-dimensional headlights, while LED lighting elements further accentuate the Arteon’s dominant shape.

The four-door saloon is set to be distinguishable amongst its competitors for its innovative and revolutionary design, whilst providing incredible practicality. The doors of the Arteon comprise frameless windows which are symptomatic of a grand tourer, yet the top-hinged and wide-opening tailgate provides easy access to a very large boot.

About the design of the Arteon, Exterior Designer Tobias Sühlmann, explains: “At first sight, the Arteon arouses enthusiasm through its expressive design. It then surprises through its practical virtues. This combination is unique."

Whilst Volkswagen hasn’t revealed any specifics, the innovative design of the Arteon will surely be matched with ground-breaking technology such as state-of-the-art assistance and infotainment systems to complete its luxurious image.

Volkswagen devised the name by combing two component parts that embody what the Arteon is: 'Art' describes the saloon's harmonious lines and emotionality. The ending 'eon' identifies it, in the same way as Volkswagen's top model for the Chinese market, the PHIDEON, as a premium model.

The Arteon will be a totally new model from Volkswagen which will target the premium saloon market and is expected to launch in the summer of 2017, following its official unveiling at Geneva.
