After much speculation, Volkswagen has finally confirmed that a rugged version of its iconic Beetle model will enter production. The model was shown off at the recent LA Motor Show and will arrive in showrooms in 2016.
The Beetle Dune will enter the European market after a USA release and will be available as a coupé or convertible. Its design draws from the customised buggies popular during the 1960s, with retro wheel arch extensions, a wider track and a ride height that is 10cm higher.
The bumpers have also been reshaped and 18-inch alloy wheels merge with an uprated suspension system. An eye-catching Sandstorm Yellow metallic paint finish is complemented by ‘Dune’ decals on the body.
Inside, the dashboard has been redesigned and now holds a colour touchscreen equipped with Apple CarPlay. Sports seats hold the driver and passenger firmly in place. The standard model’s three petrol and two diesel engines will be carried over and produce up to 217bhp.
Volkswagen is yet to confirm whether or not the Beetle Dune will find its way to UK shores, but if it does, Lancaster Volkswagen will be among the first to take delivery of it. Stay informed about the car and all others from the German firm here on our news pages.
