Ultramodern Volkswagen Golf GTE concept imagines the car’s future

The Golf is among Volkswagen’s best-loved models for its sporty performance, good looks and flexible interior. The GTE is the high-performance plug-in version and one that looks likely to grow in popularity as more motorists switch to the cleaner power source.

At the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen showed off the Golf GTE Sport, a forward-thinking take on the current-generation GTE. The 390bhp concept car features vast chrome wheels and a front grille that stretches across the entire front section, above a sporty front wing. Gull wing doors open up to reveal the cabin, while the back section features a sharp spoiler and a flared tailgate.

Below the bonnet is a drive system that achieves a large power output and impressive economy at the same time. A 1.6-litre petrol engine is joined by two electric motors that together return up to a claimed 118mpg. In electric-only mode the Golf GTE Sport can travel 31 miles. With a 0-60mph time of around four seconds, the vehicle is no slow mover either.

Although concept cars are usually a more exaggerated version of the model they eventually inspire, Volkswagen buyers can look forward to an exciting new design from future Golf GTE vehicles.
