Even at first sight, DB12 is more assertive and soul-stirring than the model it replaces. A bigger front grille is flanked by new LED headlights with a distinctive new Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) signature and intricate surface detailing; the front splitter is larger, and the tracks are wider front and rear, giving it a stronger and more muscular presence. The 21” forged alloy wheels carry bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 5 S tyres made to Aston Martin’s precise specification. Smaller frameless wing mirrors cut drag, as do the flush mounted door handles. This is the first Aston Martin to carry the redesigned badge above the front grille, another sign that this is a highly significant production in the brand’s bold move forward.
PERFORMANCE
DB12 is powered by Aston Martin’s hand built, twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, tuned to deliver 680 metric horsepower and 800 Newton metres of torque, driving the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration from 0-60mph takes just 3.6 seconds, and top speed is 202mph; these figures are even faster than the V12 version of DB11, while the lighter V8 also makes it more agile. This drivetrain is complemented by a suspension system featuring new intelligent adaptive dampers and an electronic rear differential (E-diff), for supercar levels of responsiveness. A new engine cross brace, undertrays, front crossmember and rear bulkhead help deliver an extra 7% in torsional stiffness, further enhancing the precision and fidelity of DB12’s handling. Drivers have five pre-set driving modes to choose from, allowing them to incrementally explore the limits of grip and traction with confidence.
TECHNOLOGY
One of the few criticisms levelled at DB11 was its dated infotainment system; in contrast, DB12 is a quantum leap in capability and ease of use. The new system, which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, is a fully integrated multi-screen system using two 10.25-inch high-resolution screens with ultra responsive touch control. The interior features a well-judged blend of touchscreen and physical controls – the latter include gear selection, drive selection, heating and ventilation. Subscription features (free for the first three years) include 4G-connected navigation, voice assistant, car locator, breakdown response and remote diagnostics.
SAFETY
More proof that DB12 is up with the best and the latest in technology comes from the long list of driver assistance systems that come as standard. These include Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Assist. The DB12 will even spot if the driver shows signs of drowsiness.
