smart fortwo cabrio scheduled for early 2016 release

The latest generation of the popular smart fortwo cabrio will debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, with deliveries due for early 2016.

Over 200,000 units have been sold since the ForTwo family appeared on the roads in 1998, with the soft-top option among the most popular. The new model will feature everything that made the cabrio so successful in the past, while boasting new and improved upgrades to help it compete in the competitive modern market.

The new cabrio retains the famous slim-line length of 2.69m while the track is 100mm wider to create more space and improve stability around corners. A ‘tri-top’ three-layer fabric roof, supported by a heated rear window, cancels out road noise effectively and is four per cent larger than the previous model.

A simple press of a button results in the roof – available in red, blue or black – folding back seamlessly to reveal the stylish cabin. The soft-top roof opens electronically in 12 seconds, even while driving.

To enhance occupant safety, the frame incorporates ultra-high strength steel to create a cell 15 per cent stronger than the cabrio’s predecessor. This also means even greater ride quality, which comes in handy when enjoying either of the punchy engines available.

The 1.0-litre petrol unit is expected to generate 70bhp which makes light work of busy city streets and enables the cabrio to hit a top speed of 96mph. A 0.9-litre turbo model, meanwhile, will be coupled with your choice of either a dual-clutch transmission or, for the first time, a five-speed manual gearbox.

An optional infotainment system will be available in the form of a seven-inch touch-screen, complete with MirrorLink smartphone integration. Colourful materials have been used throughout, typifying smart’s quirky character. Match your car to your personality with a wealth of customisable options offered across the three trim levels.
