Design

Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words. The DB12 Volante’s lean, muscular lines look stunning from every angle, hood up or down. Though identical to the coupé from the A-pillar forwards, the Volante’s rear deck has been remodelled to accommodate the K-Fold mechanism of the eight-layer fabric roof. When stowed, it leaves a long, low and seamless profile from the badge on the bonnet to the trailing edge of the boot, within which there’s 262 litres of luggage space. To compensate for the missing roof, there’s a strengthening brace in the engine bay and extra strengthening for the suspension mounting points. The hood itself is available in four colours and can be raised in 16 seconds or lowered in 14 seconds, even in a 30mph headwind.

Performance

Apart from some minor fettling of the rear spring rate and damper settings, the DB12 Volante’s boasts the same specification as the coupé. The hand-built, twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 produces 671bhp and 800Nm of torque, sending the power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. With launch control engaged the DB12 Volante will rocket from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds, a mere one tenth of a second slower than the coupé. Top speed is 202mph (hood up, we suspect). An electronic limited-slip diff, new generation adaptive dampers, four-stage ESC and a choice of five pre-defined dynamic modes deliver the precision and control such immense performance deserves.

Safety

The DB12 Volante’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) include forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, blind spot and lane departure assistance, auto headlights, traffic sign monitoring and rear cross traffic assist. The DB12 will also monitor the driver for drowsiness.

Technology

The DB12 coupé’s infotainment and in-car technology represents a major leap forward from the DB11, and the Volante’s interior specification carries it over unchanged. That means you get a fully integrated multi-screen system with full online connectivity and clear, 10.25” touchscreens that respond to single and multi-finger gestures. Because touchscreens aren’t always ideal when you’re focused on the road ahead, Aston Martin has retained buttons for key operations such as gear selection, drive selection, heating and ventilation. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, as is a Bowers & Wilkins 390w 11-speaker surround sound system.
