Creating a much sportier impression than its predecessors, the new 5 Series Saloon Hybrid has a simple elegant design whilst injecting a sense of executive flair. On the entry-level SE, there is a choice of 17, 18 or 19-inch wheels, while M Sport cars get a new design of 19 or 20-inch alloy wheels. The new active air kidney front grille improves aerodynamics and fuel consumption, it knows when the engine, brakes and other components need air and automatically opens its vents. With enhanced proportions and more style from redesigned bumpers, new sculptured front and rear lights, and trapezoidal exhaust pipes on either side to boot, the 5 Series boasts striking design elements inside and out. Inside there is a bigger-than-before 12.3-inch infotainment screen, with BMW's Intelligent Personal Assistant voice-control system and full smartphone connectivity. SE models offer ambient lighting, heated front seats, leather upholstery and a leather steering wheel, plus air-conditioning, digital radio, and folding mirrors. Upgrading to M Sport adds an M leather steering wheel, sport seats up front and an anthracite headliner.
PERFORMANCE
The BMW 5 Series Saloon Hybrid is here to make a lasting impression with an impeccable driving experience. It delivers impressive power living up to BMW’s name of ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’ with the Saloon Plug-in Hybrid delivering up to 37 miles in pure electric. You can recharge the 4th generation high-voltage lithium-ion battery to 80% capacity in just 2.6 hours of home charging, using the BMW i Wallbox Connect. Power wise, the 530e rear-wheel-drive and 530e xDrive four-wheel-drive Saloons both make 292hp and 420Nm of torque, with identical 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds. Or you can up the ante and discover the 545e xDrive delivering 389bhp and 600Nm with a 0-62mph speed of just 4.7 seconds. All 530e and 545e models will do 87mph on electric power alone and the fuel efficient 530e has an electric range of up to 38 miles with CO2 emissions ranging from 30-50g/km depending on specification with returns of up to 217mpg.
TECHNOLOGY
The 5 Series is at the leading edge of driver-aid technology. The clever Hybrid mode uses real time traffic information to optimise fuel efficiencies, and it’s the first new BMW that comes with Android Auto smartphone mirroring and Apple CarPlay as standard. The driver will feel more connected than ever before with features like the BMW ConnectedDrive with Intelligent Personal Assistant and the latest standard Connective Package Professional, which includes Connected Music and Remote Service. There is a bigger-than-before 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and a wide array of radar and camera-based driver-assistance technology onboard. The ConnectedDrive feature includes access to a concierge service and eCall, which automatically contacts the emergency services if the airbags deploy. The BMW Personal Assistant works much like Siri or Alexa, and it will carry out a range of tasks for you like changing the volume on the stereo or adjusting the air con.
SAFETY
The BMW 5 Series Saloon Hybrid has a full 5-star safety rating and a whole host of Driver-assistance systems, including updated steering and lane-keeping assistance functions including road sign recognition, emergency brake assist and rear cross-traffic alert. The 5 Series comes with optional Driving Assistance Plus with a wide variety of safety features including adaptive cruise control, and active navigation. For an extra pair of eyes on the road there is also a multi-angle dashboard camera that records up to 40 seconds of video footage from different points around the car from your journey. This can be watched back on the car's screen or downloaded via the USB port. In the event of the car detecting an impact, the 20 seconds before and 20 seconds after an impact will be automatically saved.
