The X1’s new look is most apparent from the front, where you’ll note the larger one-piece kidney grille as well as a redesigned front bumper incorporating horizontal LED fog lights and LED headlights. At the rear are new enlarged 90mm tailpipes and what BMW describes as a ‘cleaner interpretation’ of the rear LED lights. Inside, it’s a similar story of a gentle upgrade to the specification of an already-excellent interior. All models get a larger 8.8-inch Control Display as standard while a 10.25-inch display is available as an option.
PERFORMANCE
While the previous generation of the X1 only offered one petrol and three diesel engines, it’s all change for 2022 as the shift towards petrol continues. The two petrol models, the 140hp 18i and 192hp 20i, are both available with either sDrive front-drive or xDrive all-wheel drive. The 18i does 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds and returns up to 42.8mpg, while the more powerful 20i’s figures are 7.4 seconds and 40.9mpg respectively. Fans of diesel’s greater torque and fuel efficiency have a choice of 18d in either sDrive or xDrive versions, or the range-topping 20d which is xDrive (all-wheel drive) only. Top for economy is the 18d with up to 56.5mpg while the 20d’s figures of 50.4mpg and 7.8 seconds are very impressive – and every modern BMW diesel is Euro6 emissions compliant.
TECHNOLOGY
The X1’s standard-fit 8.8-inch Control Display features BMW Navigation with Real Time Traffic Information, while further options include a 10.25-inch upgrade and a 5.7-inch Black Panel instrument cluster. All models feature a powered tailgate as standard while option packs include Technology Pack 1 with a reversing camera, BMW Icon Adaptive LED lights, enhanced Bluetooth and Wi-Fi spot preparation. The BMW Technology Pack 2 includes Head-Up Display and BMW Navigation Plus.
SAFETY
BMW’s Active Guard safety system includes forward vehicle collision warning, city collision mitigation, brake preconditioning and speed limit information as standard. The optional Driving Assistant Plus includes lane departure warning, front collision warning with brake intervention, high-beam assistant, speed limit info, active cruise control with Stop & Go function and traffic jam assist.
