The world has had its first glimpse of the pinnacle of BMW M, the phenomenal BMW M8 Competition Coupé and M8 Competition Convertible.
The core objective of the BMW M8 is to ignite passion. The designers and engineers have been focused on creating a car with a bold statement – one that stirs emotions whether it is seen, heard or experienced first-hand.
“Strength, elegance and aerodynamic finesse all come together in the exterior of the new BMW M8 to create an unbelievably fascinating vehicle – quite simply ‘the most BMW’ in every aspect.” Marcus Syring, Head of Design BMW M
The interior of the new BMW M8 Competition Coupé and Convertible is the definition of sporting style. It remains recognisably M, whilst combining the luxurious ambience of the 8 Series to create an exceptional interior experience which firmly cements it’s position as the most exclusive offering in the BMW range.
“The new BMW M8 offers a user interface that is more intense and sporty than ever before. All digital elements are inspired by motor sports with a self-contained M design.” Gernot Schmierer, Head of Design User Experience
The M8 Competition models draw their energy from the most powerful engine ever developed for a BMW M production car. The engine’s immense thrust is accompanied by a stirring soundtrack courtesy of the specifically designed exhaust system. Fine-tuning of the engine sound, using electrically controlled flaps, suppresses intrusive frequency ranges and gives greater voice to the engine’s linear power delivery and high-revving tendencies.
First seen in the BMW M5, the highly sophisticated interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential channels the engine’s remarkable output through the car’s wheels to sublime effect.
The engine’s torque is distributed between the front and rear wheels with full variability by means of the transfer case’s electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, before the Active M Differential splits it again between the two rear wheels, as appropriate. This ensures notably enhanced traction, agility and directional stability at all times.
The precise interaction between powertrain, chassis technology and aerodynamics has been carefully honed over the course of intensive testing at the BMW’s test track in Miramas, France, winter testing in Arjeplog, Sweden and the legendary Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit. The chassis setup has been carefully adjusted to the engine’s higher output. Tuned with the specific demands of track use in mind, the versatility of the chassis also caters for everyday use and long distance comfort.
